SEPTEMBER SIXTH (PERFORMANCE)

30 Jan 2011

“September Sixth” was performed in the Black Box Theater on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. It was made possible by a Black Box student residency and an Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program award from CU Boulder. This piece was composed in response to the loss of my childhood home in a forest fire in the mountains outside of Boulder, CO. My grandfather built the home and my mother and her siblings were also raised there. The fire occurred during my final semester at CU Boulder. The performance features melted and burned remnants of the home, transformed into instruments using contact microphones and played by myself as well as Janet Feder and Mark McCoin. Luke Iwabuchi dances in the second movement, and Skye Hughes dances with me in the penultimate. Curtis Broome plays drums in the emo section. The below video is a highlight reel to give a sense of what each of the five movements contained.
